विद्वानों में बराबर यह विवाद चला आया है कि तान्त्रिक पद्धति बैदिक है अथवा अवैदिक। आगम में तो विशेष स्थान इसे प्राप्त है ही, पर कुछ लोगों का मत है कि पुराणों को जिस प्रकार वैदिक आधार उपलब्ध है उस तरह तन्त्र को प्राप्त नहीं है। बहुत से विशिष्ट विद्वान इस मत से सहमत नहीं हैं और उनका विचार है कि वैदिक साहित्य भी तान्त्रिक विचारों से अछूता नहीं है । वेदों के सिवाय बौद्ध और जैन विचारधारा में तान्त्रिक पद्धति का उदय हुआ स्पष्ट दृष्टिगोचर होता है। हमारी सांस्कृतिक परम्परा का आधार विशेष रूप से पुराण हैं और पुराणों में तान्त्रिक विचारों का बहद् रूप में समावेश स्पष्ट दिखाई देता है। यह दुर्भाग्य की बात है कि आरम्भ से ही तन्त्र का साहित्य, तान्त्रिक विचारधारा, दर्शन, उसकी साधना, योगाचार, मन्त्रों की सिद्धि की पद्धति और पूजा का क्रम एक रहस्यमय ढंग से अवतरित हआ और गोपनीयता के आवरण में आरम्भ से ही ढंक गया। धीरे धीरे अज्ञान के वशीभूत यह व्यापक विचार फैला कि तान्त्रिक साधना का स्वरूप केवल जादू-टोना…………..

गोपीनाथ कवराज (7 सितंबर 1887 – 12 जून 1976) एक भारतीय संस्कृत विद्वान, इंडोलॉजिस्ट और दार्शनिक थे। सबसे पहले 1914 में एक लाइब्रेरियन नियुक्त, वह 1923 से 1937 तक सरकार संस्कृत कॉलेज, वाराणसी के प्रिंसिपल थे। वह उस अवधि के दौरान सरस्वती भवन अनुदानमाला का संपादक भी थे।
Gopinath Kaviraj (7 September 1887 – 12 June 1976) was an Indian Sanskrit scholar, Indologist and philosopher. First appointed in 1914 a librarian, he was the Principal of Government Sanskrit College, Varanasi from 1923 to 1937. He was also the editor of the Sarasvati Bhavana Granthamala during that period.
