ज्योतिष या ज्यौतिष विषय वेदों जितना ही प्राचीन है। प्राचीन काल में ग्रह, नक्षत्र और अन्य खगोलीय पिण्डों का अध्ययन करने के विषय को ही ज्योतिष कहा गया था। इसके गणित भाग के बारे में तो बहुत स्पष्टता से कहा जा सकता है कि इसके बारे में वेदों में स्पष्ट गणनाएं दी हुई हैं। फलित भाग के बारे में बहुत बाद में जानकारी मिलती है।
भारतीय आचार्यों द्वारा रचित ज्योतिष की पाण्डुलिपियों की संख्या एक लाख से भी अधिक है। [1]
प्राचीनकाल में गणित एवं ज्यौतिष समानार्थी थे परन्तु आगे चलकर इनके तीन भाग हो गए।
(१) तन्त्र या सिद्धान्त – गणित द्वारा ग्रहों की गतियों और नक्षत्रों का ज्ञान प्राप्त करना तथा उन्हें निश्चित करना।
(२) होरा – जिसका सम्बन्ध कुण्डली बनाने से था। इसके तीन उपविभाग थे । क- जातक, ख- यात्रा, ग- विवाह ।
(३) शाखा – यह एक विस्तृत भाग था जिसमें शकुन परीक्षण, लक्षणपरीक्षण एवं भविष्य सूचन का विवरण था।
इन तीनों स्कन्धों ( तन्त्र-होरा-शाखा ) का जो ज्ञाता होता था उसे ‘संहितापारग’ कहा जाता था।
तन्त्र या सिद्धान्त में मुख्यतः दो भाग होते हैं, एक में ग्रह आदि की गणना और दूसरे में सृष्टि-आरम्भ, गोल विचार, यन्त्ररचना और कालगणना सम्बन्धी मान रहते हैं। तंत्र और सिद्धान्त को बिल्कुल पृथक् नहीं रखा जा सकता । सिद्धान्त, तन्त्र और करण के लक्षणों में यह है कि ग्रहगणित का विचार जिसमें कल्पादि या सृष्टयादि से हो वह सिद्धान्त, जिसमें महायुगादि से हो वह तन्त्र और जिसमें किसी इष्टशक से (जैसे कलियुग के आरम्भ से) हो वह करण कहलाता है । मात्र ग्रहगणित की दृष्टि से देखा जाय तो इन तीनों में कोई भेद नहीं है। सिद्धान्त, तन्त्र या करण ग्रन्थ के जिन प्रकरणों में ग्रहगणित का विचार रहता है वे क्रमशः इस प्रकार हैं-
१-मध्यमाधिकार २–स्पष्टाधिकार ३-त्रिप्रश्नाधिकार ४-चन्द्रग्रहणाधिकार ५-सूर्यग्रहणाधिकार
६-छायाधिकार ७–उदयास्ताधिकार ८-शृङ्गोन्नत्यधिकार ९-ग्रहयुत्यधिकार १०-याताधिकार…………….
The subject of astrology or astrology is as ancient as the Vedas. In ancient times, the study of planets, constellations and other celestial bodies was called astrology. Regarding its mathematics part, it can be said very clearly that clear calculations have been given about it in the Vedas. Information about the resulting part is available much later.
The number of astrology manuscripts composed by Indian masters is more than one lakh. [1]

In ancient times, mathematics and astrology were synonymous, but later they were divided into three parts.
(1) Tantra or Siddhanta – To obtain the knowledge of the motions of planets and constellations by mathematics and to determine them.
(2) Hora – Which was related to making a horoscope. It had three subdivisions. A – Jataka, B – Travel, C – Marriage.
(3) Branch – This was a detailed section in which the details of predictions, symptoms and predictions were given.
The one who knew these three skandhas (Tantra-hora-shakha) was called ‘Samhitaparaga’.
There are mainly two parts in the Tantra or Siddhanta, one in which the calculation of planets etc. and in the other the values related to creation-beginning, round thoughts, yantra-creation and time-calculation remain. Tantra and theory cannot be kept separate at all. Among the characteristics of Siddhant, Tantra and Karana is that the idea of planetary mathematics which is from Kalpadi or Srishtyadi, that principle, which is from Mahayugadi, that Tantra and in which it is from any Ishtashak (like from the beginning of Kali Yuga) is called Karana. If we see only from the point of view of planetary mathematics, then there is no difference between these three.
