यह रामनाथ की कहानी बताता है, एक सुंदर, सुख चाहने वाला, घमंडी, लेकिन नैतिक रूप से कमजोर व्यक्ति, जो अपनी पत्नी जलपा को उसके गहने उपहार में देकर खुश करने की कोशिश करता है, जिसे वह वास्तव में अपने अल्प वेतन के माध्यम से नहीं खरीद सकता है, और फिर कर्ज के जाल में फंस जाता है, जो अंततः उसे गबन करने के लिए मजबूर करता है। गोदान के बाद इसे प्रेमचंद का सबसे अच्छा काम माना जाता है।

इसे हृषिकेश मुखर्जी द्वारा इसी नाम से 1966 की हिंदी फिल्म में रूपांतरित किया गया था।

It tells the story of Ramanath, a handsome, pleasure-seeking, boastful, but morally weak person, who tries to make his wife Jalpa, happy by gifting her jewelry which he can’t really afford to buy via his meager salary, and then gets engulfed in a web of debts, which ultimately forces him to commit embezzlement. It is considered Premchand’s best work, after Godaan.

It was adapted into a 1966 Hindi film with the same name by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
