यह ग्रंथ विषयवस्तु एवं आकार की दृष्टि से अत्यन्त विलक्षण है क्योंकि इसमें समग्र आयुर्वेद साहित्य को समन्वित किया गया है। चरक, सुश्रुत और वाग्भट आदि पूर्वाचार्यों द्वारा प्रदत्त ज्ञान यहाँ एक साथ उपलब्ध है। आयुर्वेद में ऐसा कोई अन्य ग्रंथ नहीं है जिसमें आयुर्वेद के सम्पूर्ण अंगों का इतना समुचित एवं सुव्यवस्थित वर्णन प्राप्त होता हो।

इस ग्रन्थ में पृथ्वी पर प्राप्त सभी प्रकार के वानस्पतिक (औद्भिज), प्राणिज व पार्थिव (अं: Plants, Animals & Minerals) पदार्थों के गुणकर्मों का संस्कृत भाषा में श्लोकबद्ध वर्णन मिलता है।

ग्रन्थ के आरम्भ में मग्गलाचरण के बाद ग्रंथकार आयुर्वेद का लक्षण बताते हैं –

आयुर्वेदाहितं व्याधिर्निदानं शमनं तथा।
विद्यते यत्र विद्वद्भिः सः आयुर्वेद उच्यते॥
अर्थात् – जिसमें आयु (अवस्था) के हित और अहित पदार्थ, रोगों का निदान एवं व्याधियों का विनाश (चिकित्सा) के विषय में कहा गया हो, विद्वान् उसे आयुर्वेद कहते हैं।

इस ग्रन्थ में वनौषधियों के निर्णय और स्वरूप ज्ञान के लिए शास्त्र-निर्दिष्ट पद्धति से वनों और पर्वतों में जाकर अमूल्य ज्ञान का संग्रह है। इस ग्रन्थ के अंत में लिखा गया परिशिष्ट भाग आयुर्वेद और यूनानी चिकित्सा का समन्वित देशी चिकित्सा प्रणाली का मार्ग दर्शन करता है। परिशिष्ट तीन खण्डों में विभाजित है। प्रथम खंड में प्राकृतिक पदार्थो (अयुर्वेदिक जड़ी बूटियों ), द्वितीय खंड में यूनानी चिकित्सा तथा तृतीय खंड में देशी चिकित्सा का विवरण मिलता है। पुस्तक के सबसे अंत में अकारादि-क्रमानुसार निघन्टु भाग-स्थित द्रव्यों के व्यहारोपयोगी अंग तथा उनकी मात्राएँ दी गई हैं।

At the beginning of the book, after the Maggalacharan, the authors tell the symptoms of Ayurveda –

ayurvedahitam vyadhirnidanam shamanam and.
Vidyate yatra viddabhih sa: Ayurveda uchyate॥
That is, in which it is said about the benefits and harms of age (state), the diagnosis of diseases, and the destruction of diseases (medicine), scholars call it Ayurveda.

In this book, there is a collection of invaluable knowledge by going to the forests and mountains in a scriptural-specified method for the decision and nature of forest medicines. The appendix part written at the end of this text gives guidance to the integrated indigenous system of medicine of Ayurveda and Unani medicine. The Appendix is ​​divided into three sections.
