गुफाओं से मिले अवशेषों और साहित्यिक स्रोतों के आधार पर यह स्पष्ट है कि भारत में एक कला के रूप में ‘चित्रकला’ बहुत प्राचीन काल से प्रचलित रही है। भारत में चित्रकला और कला का इतिहास मध्यप्रदेश की भीमबेटका गुफाओं की प्रागैतिहासिक काल की चट्टानों पर बने पशुओं के रेखांकन और चित्रांकन के नमूनों से प्रारंभ होता है। महाराष्ट्र के नरसिंहगढ़ की गुफाओं के चित्रों में चितकबरे हरिणों की खालों को सूखता हुआ दिखाया गया है। इसके हजारों साल बाद रेखांकन और चित्रांकन हड़प्पाकालीन सभ्यता की मुद्राओं पर भी पाया जाता है।
हिन्दु और बौद्ध दोनों साहित्य ही कला के विभिन्न तरीकों और तकनीकों के विषय में संकेत करते हैं जैसे लेप्यचित्र, लेखाचित्र और धूलिचित्र। पहली प्रकार की कला का सम्बन्ध लोक कथाओं से है। दूसरी प्रागेतिहासिक वस्त्रों पर बने रेखा चित्र और चित्रकला से संबंद्ध है और तीसरे प्रकार की कला फर्श पर बनाई जाती है………
